Election Results – Zones 1 & 4

Following election procedures, Harold Kress was declared elected as Zone 1 Director, by acclamation.  Zone 1 encompasses Lambton, Middlesex, Elgin, Huron, Perth, Kent and Essex Counties. Harold was the incumbent Director and a copy of his resume follows.

HAROLD KRESS, ZONE 1

Harold Kress currently milks cows in a barn with 60 tie stalls and drive through feeding.  The 150 acre farm, Cedarsquare, was purchased in 1967 by his father.  Harold graduated from Centralia College in Agribusiness Management in 1994 and then spent nine months on a dairy farm in Australia.  After coming home, he worked full time on his parent’s farm, was married in 1998, bought a local 50 acre farm in 2002 and the succession of the operation to Harold and his wife Joanne was completed in 2012.  The barn, which Harold designed after their first fire in 2003, is located near Lucan, just north of London and employs their children and local teens.

Harold has been a board member of CanWest DHI since 2013 and on the executive since 2015. He held the position of delegate for CanWest DHI for 11 years prior to this, including several years as a resolution committee representative. In the past, Harold served on the Middlesex County Dairy Producer Committee for nine years and was the chair for three of those years. Delegate positions with EastGen and the Middlesex County Holstein Club are also part of his involvement in the dairy industry.

Daniella, Fiona, Wilson and Samantha are Harold and Joanne’s four children. When not in the barn, Harold enjoys helping homeschool their children, leading a worship band and serving in multiple ways at Community Bible Church.

ARLENE DORLAND, ZONE 4

Following election procedures, Arlene Dorland was declared elected as Zone 4 Director, by acclamation.  Zone 4 encompasses Victoria, Peterborough, Hastings, Northumberland, Prince Edward, Lennox & Addington, Frontenac, Renfrew, Lanark & Leeds Counties.  Arlene was the incumbent Director and a copy of her resume follows.

Arlene operates Dorland Farms Ltd. in Northumberland County with her husband William Dorland and son Justin and his wife Jennifer.  Born in Renfrew County, after graduating from Kemptville College, Arlene moved to the Brighton area.  Arlene had been a DHI county delegate for 10 years prior to becoming DHI Director in 2012.

Dorland Farms has 300 Holsteins (milking 180) with a BCA of 250, housed in a barn built in 2003.  Corn, beans and alfalfa are grown on 500 acres to feed the cattle with the excess sold.

Arlene and William have three children – Justin – married to Jennifer, Jaclyn married and working in Australia and Melissa working on the farm.

CanWest DHI is important in helping producers manage their farms. The information received today is as important as it was in the past. The scope of information has changed and how it is received has changed, but the producer who uses the information is still important and valued at DHI. Arlene plans to continue to work for producers to ensure that DHI and the producers work together to create a viable future. Arlene's hobbies include curling, camping and catering.
